International Paper accelerates expansion into Russian market

Author: Date:2012-9-17 19:06:36

International Paper considers accelerating its expansion into the Russian market in the coming years, according to John Faraci, the company’s chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
According to him, at present International Paper remains one of the leading pulp and paper producers in Russia, and the company plans to further strengthen its market position through the modernization of already existing enterprises.
International Paper, which is headquartered in Memphis, is currently actively investing in the modernization of its Russian enterprises. According to Faraci, the company plans to invest more than $1.2 billion in the modernization of the Bratsk Koryazhma enterprises, which is part of local Ilim Group, the partner of International Paper in Russia.
In the case of Koryazhma, in November this year the modern paper machine will be launched at the capacities of the enterprise, which will produce office paper of consumer formats as well as coated offset paper. At the same time there are also plans for the launch of the world's largest pulp production at the capacities of the Bratsk plant.
Faraci commented:
"Paper consumption in Russia grows by 5 percent annually, contrary to the US, where its currently declines by 3 percent each year. Every second sheet of office paper, sold in Russia, is produced at our mill in Svetogorsk in the St. Petersburg region. Our investment and technologies together with knowledge of the local market by "Ilim" allowed our joint venture to be successful and to make a profit for the last five years”.
According to him, the recent entry of Russia into the WTO will promote foreign investments in the country’s pulp and paper industry, including from International Paper.
